Chronic Pharyngitis:
Pharyngitis becomes a recurrent complaint in some patients with in-between episodes of symptom-free days/weeks. Sometimes the recurrence is observed when the incomplete course of modern medications are consumed, and the patients stop the medicines as the symptoms disappear. In few cases, the symptoms subside temporarily due to partial coverage of antibiotics. In such instances, the symptoms disappear for the time being but reappear due to some trivial exposure to cold or weather change.
Tobacco smoking, exposure to other forms of chemical smoke/ fumes can cause chronic Pharyngitis. At times a persistent type of irritation and stomach acid reflux are also found. Environmental pollutants also play a significant role.
Among the other factors precipitating Pharyngitis are:
- Mouth breathing exposing the pharynx to air
- Overuse of voice in professions like singing, public speaking
- Certain viruses and bacterial exposure
- Occupational hazards leading to exposure to extremes of heat or cold or chemicals
- Tendency to take cold.

How to confirm the diagnosis?
Complete details and history of the onset and progress of the disease are most important to understand the cause and prognosis of the patient. In some cases, further investigations are needed to evaluate the depth of the illness with specific symptoms. Investigations like complete blood count, throat swab culture may be required.
Phobic Disorders (PD)
Phobic disorders are a marked and persistent fear of objects or situations, which results in an immediate anxiety reaction.
