  2. REM sleep or paradoxical sleep- it is associated with active dreaming and active body muscle movements. Types of Sleeping Disorder:

  • Hypersomnia [excessive sleepiness] :
    • Narcolepsy – it is a chronic recurrent form of hypersomnia where there is irresistible or uncontrollable sleep mostly seen in teenagers. Narcolepsy is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.
    • Sleep apnoea – apnoeic attack [ obstruction in breathing] occurs during night 25 to 30 times for10 seconds or more. It is associated with snoring, restlessness during sleep, day-time sleepiness, headache, loss of memory, depression, cardiac arrhythmia and loss of judgement. During apnea the sleep becomes lighter or the patient takes a deep breath and sometimes gets awake.
    • Nocturnal myoclonus – during sleep there is periodic lower leg movement associated with daytime sleepiness, anxiety, depression and cognitive defects.
