Ascites

What is it?

Ascites is a condition of accumulation of more than 25ml of body fluid in the abdomen (within the peritoneal cavity). As per recent studies, the mortality rate is fifty percent. It is a symptom rather than a disease itself.

Why it happens?

The main reason behind this fluid collection is the lurking diseases like Cirrhosis of Liver, Heart diseases, Nephrotic syndrome, Cancer, Pancreatitis, Tuberculosis etc. Among these the alcoholic Cirrhosis of Liver is the most common cause. Ascites is basically a late complication of a disease.

What are the symptoms?

Apart from the symptoms of the underlying disease, the bulged-out abdomen becomes a reason of great discomfort and breathing distress.

How it gets treated?

A proper medical assistance and a thorough investigations are needed to diagnose it. The basic investigations are Ultrasonography of abdomen, Diagnostic Paracentesis with detailed study of the Ascitic fluid are recommended. Based on the outcome of these investigations further investigations may be required to arrive at the root cause of the ascites.

The treatment under the conventional mode are aspiration of fluid, diuretics, certain shunt procedures, even liver transplantation in case of cirrhosis of liver. As it is complication of an advanced disease condition it is often incurable.

Basic Medical Care

Certain dietary modification like low sodium salt intake, abstinence from alcohol consumption etc. are advised.

Why Homeopathy?

Homeopathic treatment is found to be useful in treating as well as giving relief to patients where complete cure is not possible where there is irreversible damage to the organs. Certain medicines like Apis Mellifica, Arsenic Album, Bryonia Alba, China, Lachesis, Silicea, Carduus Marianus, Apocynum, Acetic Acid, Mercurius, Helleborus, Dulcamara etc are few of the homeopathic medicines which may be prescribed according the condition of the patient.

Homeopathy treats patients in a holistic approach, it removes the cause by means of individualisation of each patient. Which means patients may not be prescribed with the same medicine even if they suffer from same medical conditions. The homeopathic prescription can only be decided by homeopathic doctors.
